Hamilton has quite a few beautiful parks, but they have way too many unwelcome visitors... Pigeons!
To combat this, Street Spark (a program by the Fitton center) implemented what they call “Operation Falcon”!
That’s a cool name and all, but what is it?
Well the Fitton center held an event for Street Spark, to select art that they could paint near parks, and businesses. That would then help lighten those areas up. One of those places was the McDulen Garage. Prior to the event, this was a barren, concrete, Pigeon infested area... It had no hope of looking beautiful...
However... they knew the perfect piece to lighten up the area. There was really only one piece of art that could. “Taking Flight”

It was hoped that this piece would not only lighten the area up and make it beautiful, but also that the giant sparrows would scare away the pigeons.
It worked too!
Well except for the pigeons... they’ve breathed in too many bus fumes... They’re too dumb and over fed to tell the difference between a giant bird, or a bread crumb, from a bagel.
We asked Taylor Stone-Welch, the creator of “Taking Flight”, what his thoughts were.
He said: “I work downtown so I’m well aware of the pigeon problem. They are everywhere. But I never understood how the mural was supposed to deter them. Either way, it was a lot of fun designing the mural.”
“Maybe I should’ve gone with cats instead of sparrows...”
Cats would be interesting. Overall though, the project worked! The art and park look beautiful!
The only problem is the pigeons... why are there so many of them?!!!
